tis the season: A Krampus Carol by Anthony Bourdain

Krampus is Santa Claus' whip-toting Christmas sidekick. According to legend, Krampus joins Santa where he tends to the children on Santa's naughty list. No coal here though. Instead, Krampus whips and licks children into shape or carries them off in his sack.
Leave it to anthony bourdain to come up with this sinister little christmas tale. I've chosen this vid as one of my instant christmas classics.

'What The Water Gave Me' - Florence & The Machine's New SIngle (VIDEO)

Florence and the Machine‘s second album is set to drop in November, and here is the first track called “What the Water Gave Me“. It's available now via her website and iTunes.
It’s a song for the water… Because in music and art what I’m really interested in are the things that are overwhelming. The ocean seems to me to be nature’s great overwhelmer. When I was writing this song I was thinking a lot about all those people who’ve lost their lives in vain attempts to save their loved ones from drowning. It’s about water in all forms and all bodies. It’s about a lot of things; Virginia Woolf creeps into it, and of course Frieda Kahlo, whose painfully beautiful painting gave me the title.

The song is exciting & intense and something of a new direction -- here's to hoping there's more of this on the new album.

Four-Year-Old Aelita Andre - Prodigy of Color Exhibition in New York City

Without explaining who Aelita was or about her age, her mother showed some examples of her art to the curator of an exhibition she was herself due to take part in – and he was so impressed that he asked to get in touch with the artist so that he could include the work he had been shown! Once the identity of the artist was explained to him, he remained undaunted – the quality of the work proved that it should be included in the exhibition together with that of talented professional artists, regardless of the age of its creator. Since then Aelita has gained prestige throughout the world, and her paintings are held in collections in Europe, Asia and Australia. Britain’s BBC even congratulated her on her second birthday!  - agora art blog

remarkable: Touch Wood ad showcases Japan's beauty, mankind's ingenuity (video)

This extremely elaborate three-minute Japanese ad for a cell phone is way more entertaining than it should be. A wooden ball plays Bach’s Cantata 147 in a forest just by rolling down a track designed by Kenjiro Matsuo. No splicing or video magic -this is the actual music played by a contraption that Rube Goldberg or any musician would be proud of.

this is genius: Julius Von Bismarck's 'Image Fulgurator'

The Image Fulgurator is a device for physically manipulating photographs. It intervenes when a photo is being taken, without the photographer being able to detect anything. The manipulation is only visible on the photo afterwards.

In principle, the Fulgurator can be used anywhere where there is another camera nearby that is being used with a flash. It operates via a kind of reactive flash projection that enables an image to be projected on an object exactly at the moment when someone else is photographing it. The intervention is unobtrusive because it takes only a few milliseconds. Every photo another photographer takes of an object at which the Fulgurator is also aimed is affected by the manipulation. Hence visual information can be smuggled unnoticed into the images of others.

the beautiful intl. language of surf: The Boys From Ponta Preta (short film)

Set on the Cape Verde islands off the western coast of Africa, this short film shows how three young men struggling with the country’s limited opportunities took the tourists’ sport of kitesurfing and made it their own – with one even becoming world champion. Titik, Mitu and Djo explain how they spent their early days skipping school at the beach and learning from the global surf community any way that they could. Now they have set up a surf school that teaches the tourists, and offers hope to others who are stuck in the island’s slums.

Street artists hold laser graffitti protest over commisioned-then-censored public mural

A crew of street and graffiti artists, together with a handful of war veterans, gathered Monday night in the dark, empty parking lot of MOCA's Geffen Contemporary in Little Tokyo to stage a guerrilla protest performance against the museum's director, Jeffrey Deitch.

The MOCA wall has been blank since Deitch had Italian street artist Blu's antiwar mural whitewashed from it in early December. Deitch had commissioned Blu to paint the mural; but after it was completed, Deitch became concerned that its provocative imagery of coffins draped in dollar bills would be offensive to some in the neighborhood...

"All of us political poster artists have been a little outraged," said artist Karen Fiorito. "It shows how corporations and private institutions can control the dialogue in the public forum."
